dont use either, they will scratch the paint. get a quality soap for cars, wash often and wax often. if you keep a good wax job on the vehicle it will clean easier so you will use less soap. i also used a spray on detailer (mcguires) inbetween washes, i would rinse it off and use the detailer to finish cleaning. it helpsWhat kind of soap should be used for car washing?

Dishwashing soap, but you can get car soap fairly cheap for a gallon jug.
Be careful!
I understand your concerns with the $ issue, but
hand soap and non-car wash types can dry out your paint,
and damage the finish.
hair shampoo will do.
do not use hand soap or dish washing soap. only use one that's for vehicles, I use rain x with wax beads
